For nearly 125 years, Calvert School teachers have emphasized specialized, age-based programming to foster lifelong learners – and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the School has continually expanded its offerings to further this mission and provide families with the stability of a familiar day at school.
Located in Baltimore’s Tuscany-Canterbury neighborhood, Calvert School is a coed, K-8 independent school that believes in meeting each child exactly where they are in their growth and development. This year, following a full year of safe in-person learning in 2020-2021, Calvert’s enrollment grew to record levels, reaching 626 total students.
This feat is a testament to the strength of the Calvert community, the enthusiasm of its families, and the dedication of its teachers and administrators, who deftly adapted their lessons and procedures to enable a safe, successful school year on Tuscany Road.
“This year presented a multitude of obstacles related to COVID-19 and getting our children back in the classroom,” Head Master Andrew Holmgren said. “But thanks to the flexibility of our community, the strength of our students, and the ingenuity of our teachers, we overcame each one to safely enjoy nine months together on campus.”
As the School looks ahead to its 125th anniversary, which will be celebrated during the 2022-2023 school year, teachers and administrators plan to build upon many of last year’s innovations in technology, health and safety, and co-curriculars in order to enhance the student experience.
This year, many of the same measures remain in effect in the classroom:
- Smaller class sizes and additional homerooms minimize classroom occupancy so students can remain distanced
- Improved HVAC systems and grade-level separations further reduce transmission risk
- Upgrading campus bandwidth and implementing a 1-to-1 device program ensures that every student has access to a laptop or tablet, as well as new skills in online learning
- Professional development has expanded teachers’ prowess with online tools, video production
In addition to these measures, the School has built upon the lessons of last year to offer students many of the same clubs and activities they enjoyed before the pandemic. In fall 2020, the School provided a safer alternative to interscholastic sports: the Calvert Sports League. This coed intramural program featured soccer, flag football, and wiffle ball and included 170 Middle School athletes. Using lessons learned from the CSL, the School has successfully reinstated interscholastic sports, including football, soccer, and squash, and Lower School after school clubs, including ballet, martial arts, Star Wars club, and chess.
These vital co-curriculars provide extra enrichment outside of the classroom, encouraging students to have fun, learn new skills, and chase their passions even in challenging times.
